2020 Election nears crescendo

Early turnout for the 2020 General Election has already exceeded the total number of voters who participated in June's entirely mail-in primary and is fast approaching the total of votes cast two years ago.

According to figures released Wednesday night by the Douglas County Clerk-Treasurer's Office, 23,809 voters have already made their decision, which accounts for 63 percent of the 37,770 active voters registered in Douglas County.

“We are very pleased with the turnout and how well the process is going, Clerk-Treasurer Kathy Lewis said on Tuesday. “We would like to remind everyone that we will be open on Nevada day from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.”

Early voting continues 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at the Douglas County Community Center in Gardnerville.

Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at community centers in Gardnerville, Dresslerville, Stateline and Topaz Ranch Estates.

“For Election Day, you can vote in person at Kahle Community Center, the Community Center (in the gym), Washoe Tribe Community Center and Topaz Community Center and voters can vote at any of these locations,” Lewis said. “We will have our election tent open too for ballot drop off, same day registration and ballot replacement.”

Residents of any precinct may cast a ballot at any polling station.

Preliminary results of the Election for just Douglas County offices will be announced on Election night, but as the District 1 Commission race showed in the primary, those results may not be final.

Under Nevada law, the clerk will continue to count ballots postmarked Election Day as they come in the mail.

During the primary, which was entirely conducted through the mail, unofficial results weren’t available until nearly a week after Election Day.

Results aren’t official until they are canvassed by county commissioners on Nov. 16.
