The death of a homeless woman living in a tent below the Home Depot in Indian Hills is being investigated as a homicide.

Melissa Ann Riley, 44, was living in a draw below the home store.

Arrested at the scene was Kenneth Allen Hayes, 64, who is in Douglas County custody on a charge of open murder and failing to register as a sex offender.

Hayes was living with Riley in the tent and was arrested near the scene where a walker found Riley’s body.

Hayes is scheduled to appear in East Fork Justice Court on Monday.

Dispatchers received a report at around 7:30 p.m. Friday of someone lying in the sagebrush at the base of the hill where the Home Depot is located.

The caller reported that the person was obviously deceased. Deputies and East Fork firefighters responded and confirmed the death.

In a tweet, the sheriff’s office asked that residents stay clear of the location while they do their work.

Hayes has convictions in Douglas for attempted lewdness with a minor in 1993 and for open and gross lewdness out of Washoe County in 1988.

He was previously living at the Frontier Motel in Carson City according to the Nevada Sex Offender's registry.
