Ashlynn Campbell scored 10 of her game-high 18 points in the first quarter to put the Douglas Tigers on track to a 45-25 win on Friday at Carson’s Winterfest girls basketball game at Tom Andreasen Court.
Douglas (9-7 league, 13-14 overall) surged to an 18-7 first quarter lead on its way to a win that ended the regular season and clinched second-place in the Sierra League and home court advantage to start the Northern 4A Region Tournament.
The Tigers host Reno, the High Desert League’s No. 3 seed, on Tuesday night in an opening round game.
Carson (4-12, 9-16) was outscored 12-2 over the final 3:51 of the first quarter and never got any closer than nine points the rest of the way.
“We played with a lot of emotion and let the emotion get the better of us,” Carson coach Melissa Larsen said. “We had too many turnovers, we were missing shots, not attacking the basket and we weren’t rebounding like we needed to.”
Campbell, a 5-foot-9 senior, capped the Tigers’ pivotal first quarter run when she sank back-to-back 3-pointers from the top of the key and beat the buzzer with a jumper to extend the lead to 11 points.
“No. 42 is a really good player,” Larsen said of Campbell. “She’s a great shooter.”
Madison Rodgers, another senior, contributed eight points, six rebounds and three assists for the Tigers. Hailey Hughes played an important role underneath the glass with 11 rebounds and Campbell also pulled down eight rebounds.
Douglas finished the night with 37 rebounds as a team, 10 on the offensive end.
Lily Bouza and Lauren Lemburg scored nine and eight points respectively to lead the Senators. Bouza had six steals to provide a spark on defense.
Carson took its only lead of the game, 3-2, when Lemburg sank a 3-pointer from the right corner off an assist from Abbey Paulson.
“I’m proud of my seniors,” Larsen said. “They played through a lot of adversity this season and they never gave up.”
