The Carson High girls basketball team opened the game with 23 unanswered points en route to a 48-18 win over Hug on Friday night at Morse Burley Gym.
The surge came in the first 11:15. Hug’s first points came with 3:42 left in the half.
The Senators won’t have much time to savor their win because they return to action today at 1:30 p.m. against Lovelock, a squad that topped the Senators a year ago.
“We were aggressive and attacked the basket,” Carson coach Melissa Larsen said. “Once we got ahead, we wanted to try different things.
“Because of illness and injuries, we’ve only had seven or eight people at practice. We were trying to get people playing time.”
Bella Kordonowy had six points in the early surge, while Lily Bouza and Lauren Lemburg added four apiece.
Kordonowy finished with 13, Bouza added 10 and Lemburg eight.
Reed 58, Douglas 46
MINDEN — The Douglas Tigers hung close through three quarters before Reed pulled away to a 58-46 win on Friday.
Douglas (1-3 league, 3-6 overall) trailed 41-40 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, however, Reed (4-0, 6-1) scored 12 unanswered points to break up the Northern 4A crossover game.
Taylor Johnson led all scorers with 20 points for the Raiders, including four 3-pointers, while Vanessa Hernandez and Serene Townsell-Williams added 12 each. Townsell-Williams scored six to spark Reed’s 17-8 run through the fourth quarter.
Ashlynn Campbell led Douglas with 16 points, 14 of which came in the first half. Madison Smalley also scored 12 for the Tigers.
Reed led 33-30 at the intermission.
Muckers win thriller
Virginia City made clutch free throws in the waning seconds to grab a 36-34 win over Sierra Lutheran in a 1A game Friday night.
Aleyna Gilson led the Falcons with 11 points and 12 rebounds, and Taylor Davison tallied eight points. Kati Boogman contributed eight rebounds.
Sierra Lutheran returns to action today against Smith Valley.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Senators lose in OT
SUSANVILLE, California — Close losses continue to be the theme for the Senators, who fell to 1-5 on the season after a 66-61 overtime loss to Lassen on the first day of the Lassen Tournament.
The game was tied at 55 in regulation, and Lassen outscored Carson 11-6 in overtime.
“They hit five 3s at the end of the game to pull it together,” Carson coach Jordan Glover said. “We blew another lead, but we really played well.”
Trent Robison led Carson with 21 and Jonny Randall added 15.
Carson is scheduled to play twice today.
Reed 76, Douglas 47
MINDEN — Sophomore guard Trey Stevens scored 26 points, including seven shots from beyond the arc, to pace the Reed Raiders to a 76-47 victory at Douglas on Friday.
Reed (2-2 league, 4-7 overall) raced to a 40-15 lead midway through the second quarter and never looked back in the Northern 4A crossover game against Douglas (2-2, 2-7).
Stevens scored 15 in the second quarter, including a streak of four straight 3-pointers to help spark the Raiders.
Justin Lopez led Douglas with 15 points, 10 of which came in the second quarter.
Matt Williams and Alex Mason added 11 points each for Reed. Williams also blocked six shots and handed out four assists.
Falcons post close win
Timely foul shooting and good defense carried Sierra Lutheran to a 40-36 win over Virginia City on Friday.
Zane Warkentin scored 10 points, and Logan Schinzing and Kyman Berger each scored eight points. Schinzing also pulled down 11 rebounds while Nathan Waite had six boards.
“It was an extremely physical game,” SLHS coach Ben Walther said. “The boys played hard. It was back and forth most of the game. The defense was able to get some stops at the end.”

Carson downs Hug
RENO — Bryan Peralta scored 12 points and Joey Summers added 10 to lead Carson to a 63-28 win.
Max Fontaine and Randy Herrera had eight points apiece.
