Prep Roundup: Carson High boys, girls eliminated from postseason contention

The death knell sounded on the Carson High boys basketball team Friday.

The Senators dropped a 55-44 decision to Damonte Ranch to fall to 3-11 with just two games left in the regular season.

Carson returns to action Tuesday against Wooster, and then hosts Douglas on Friday. The Damonte boys improved to 9-5.

Derek Barry led Carson with 17 points, but it wasn’t near enough, as the Mustangs’ Drew Damboise shredded the Carson defense for 27 points.

“We took better care of the ball today,” Carson coach Jordan Glover said. “We’ve been making that an emphasis in practice, and it showed tonight.

“Damonte is well coached and plays hard-nosed defense. Drew is tough and very quick.”

Douglas rolls Wooster

MINDEN — Thirteen players reached the scoring column for Douglas in an 84-52 homecoming win against Wooster.

Douglas (6-8 Sierra League, 8-15 overall) scored 27 points in the second quarter and 23 more in the third to pull away.

Ian Ozolins led the Tigers with 16 points, including 10-for-10 from the free throw line. Andrew Collins added 15 points and Hunter Morris 10.

Benjamin Zelisse-Stewart led all scorers with 19 points, while Jeff Lawrence scored 17 for the Colts.

Douglas led 41-31 at halftime and 64-40 after three quarters.

Falcons top Pyramid

NIXON — Sierra Lutheran had a tough game against Pyramid, but claimed a 47-40 Northern 1A win Friday.

Zane Warkentin led the way with 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Kyman Berger contributed 10 points and eight rebounds, and Thomas Mellum added eight points.

“It was a good win for the boys tonight,” coach Ben Walther said. “I thought they gave a great effort.”

Fallon drops Dayton

FALLON — Fallon built a 13-point lead at the half, and cruised to a 52-34 win in a Northern 3A game Friday.

Fallon led after one quarter, 10-6, and at halftime, 26-13.

Dayton’s Josh Pasasouk led with 12 points. Trevor Burrows added seven, Lance Peterson had six and Tyler Stolfich had five.

Dayton hosts Truckee on Tuesday and Fernley on Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Carson girls fall to 3-11

RENO — Damonte Ranch outscored Carson 34-12 in the second half to win 55-31 in a Sierra League contest.

The loss dropped Carson, 3-11, officially out of the playoffs because it was swept by Galena and Damonte Ranch, the teams above the Senators in the standings.

After a 15-point second quarter, Carson trailed just 21-19 at the half. A 22-8 third-quarter barrage gave the Mustangs a comfortable lead.

“Our zone defense worked well in the first half,” assistant coach John Paulson said. “Our focus on defense was Wright and (Alexis) Hunter. Their other girls stepped up and made shots in the third quarter. Offensively we struggled in the second half running our offensive sets. We kept shooting ourselves in the foot.”

Lily Bouza led Carson with 13 and Haley Garver added 10.

Campbell paces Tigers to win

MINDEN — Ashlynn Campbell scored a season-high 27 points, highlighted by seven 3-pointers, to pace Douglas to a 63-11 win against Wooster.

Douglas (8-6 Sierra League, 12-13 overall) moved ahead of Galena in the race for second-place.

Campbell, a 5-foot-9 senior guard, shot 6-for-8 from beyond the arc in the second half on her way to setting a school single-game record.

Hannah Carr also scored 12 points for the Tigers, who led 18-3 after one quarter.

Dayton smothered by Fallon

FALLON — Fallon outscored Dayton 25-2 in the first quarter en route to a 50-12 victory.

Dayton junior Aleea McGill-Howe led the Lady Dust Devils with nine points while senior Abby Sikora added three. Both sank a 3-pointer.
