With regionals right around the corner the Greenwave swim team is pushing to qualify as many members as possible.

According to coach Ken Grimes, last weekend’s meet in South Tahoe was a challenge. Since it was the same weekend as prom, several swimmers were not in attendance — Grimes said they brought 10 swimmers to the meet. Despite the challenge, the coach said they performed well.

“We did good,” he said. “We had a decent meet against Incline … I wish we would have had everybody, but it’s the way it works.”

Still, those who were there did well. Alanis Ruben claimed second in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:37.77; Isaac Kelsey also placed second in the 50-yard freestyle, 26.27 and Amber Revels took third in the 100-yard butterfly, 1:21.29.

The boys’ 200-yard freestyle team — Dominic Schulenberg, Kelsey, Ruben and Christian Nemeth — took first, finishing 1:50.05.

“We had a few best times this weekend,” Grimes said.

At this point in the season, the coach said they are trying to get the last few swimmers qualified for events.

Tomorrow the Greenwave travels to Douglas County to swim against Truckee. Grimes said it would be tough competition, but he is confident they will do well and will have most of the team in attendance.

“We should have a full team roster and be ready to roll,” he said. “We’ll see. It’ll be a tough one, Truckee’s tough.”

This will be the team’s last meet before regionals. The regional competition is May 12 and 13. Grimes said it is hard to say how they will do in the competition; he said he hopes to have the last few swimmers qualify for events, then the team will have to decide who will compete in which events. According to Grimes, each competitor can only swim in two individual events.

“It’s really hard to say who’s going to swim what and where we need to put our swimmers,” he said.
