Prep Roundup: Carson High wrestlers 5-3 at Fallon Duals

FALLON — Carson High’s wrestling squad opened the season with a 5-3 record at the two-day Fallon Duals Tournament.

The Senators lost to Lowry’s A team (50-15) and Elko (42-27) on Friday, and posted wins over Yerington (54-21) and Spanish Springs B (60-28). On Saturday, CHS beat Lowry B (60-18), Fallon B (60-12) and Dayton (72-9), and lost 44-36 to Spanish Springs’ A squad.

“Definitely better on Saturday than we were on Friday,” CHS coach Nick Redwine said. “We lost 44-36 to Spanish Springs, but we wrestled most of the weights really tough. Overall I’m happy, but we definitely have some work to do to be where I want us to be.”

Leading the way for Carson were Jesse Case, who compiled a 7-0 record (all pins) at 182, and Kyle Rudy, who was 6-1 (5 pins) at 138. Heavyweight Brandon Macias, a first-year wrestler, had four pins en route to a 4-2 record.

“Jesse was on top of his game and was the clear leader,” Redwine said. “He controlled his matches from the start and made very few mistakes in a pretty competitive weight class. Rudy was right behind him. He isn’t quite where we want him to be yet, but he made some good strides toward regaining the smoothness and technique that he displayed at the end of last season.”

Ariel Vega (106) went 3-2 with three pins, Eli Thomas (120) went 4-3 with two pins, Alex Wells (160) went 3-2 with three pins, Zach Bumby (145) went 4-4 with three pins, Mark Trost (132) was 3-3 with three pins and Ty Evans (195) was 2-2 with two pins. Luis Mayoral (113) went 2-5, Jeremy Heaton went 0-5 at 170 and Gurjant Mand went 1-7 at 215.

Dayton wins crown

TRUCKEE — Dayton knocked off Truckee 58-47 to win the Truckee tournament on Saturday.

The Dust Devils are 3-0 heading into Tuesday’s 3A opener at Lowry.

Trevor Burrows scored 15 and pulled down seven rebounds, Tyler Stolfich added 13 points and nine rebounds and Josh Pasasouk scored 11 and grabbed 13 rebounds. Lance Peterson scored eight points.

Tigers lose

RENO — Bishop Manogue dominated play in the second and third quarters on its way to a 61-34 victory against Douglas on Saturday on the final day of the Wild West Shootout in Reno.

Manogue (2-2) outscored Douglas (1-3) 21-8 in the second quarter and 19-4 in the third to break the game open. The Miners led 36-17 at halftime.

Hunter Morris scored eight points to lead Douglas offensively.

Sierra Lutheran take 4th place

ROCKLIN, Calif. — Despite 22 points by Logan Schinzing, the Falcons lost 74-67 to Western Sierra in the third-place game Saturday night.

The Falcons played without leading scorer Zane Warkentin, who had a back injury.

Nathan Waite complemented Schinzing with 13 points and Kyman Berger added 12.

The Falcons fell behind by 18 and never recovered.

On Friday, Warkentin scored 17, Berger had 15 and Luke Bonafede added eight in the 65-61 loss to Rio Vista in the semifinals.

Carson steamrolls Vikings

RENO — The Senators earned their first win of the season, a 50-19 conquest of South Tahoe at the High Sierra Challenge at Reno High.

Lily Bouza led the way with 13 points followed by Ku’ulei Haupu with nine, Dajarrah Navarro with eight and Abbey Paulson with six.

“We played much better,” coach Melissa Larsen said. “We played as a team. We moved the ball on offense to get easy shots. We were stealing balls and getting layups.”

Falcons finish third

FORESTHILL, Calif. — Sierra Lutheran knocked off the Foresthill Wildfires, 47-21, Saturday afternoon in the third-place game at the Forest Lake Christian School Christmas Classic.

Aleyna Gilson scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds. Taylor Davison scored 11, and Brynna Hansen and Amanda Almeida had 10 points each. Hansen also had three steals and three assists.

Earlier on Saturday, SLHS fell to Forest Lake 40-28 despite 10 points from Gibson and eight by Hansen.

Dayton girls win 2

HAWTHORNE — Dayton racked up its first two wins of the season, knocking off Virginia City, 39-30, and Sierra Ridge, 47-14.

Tamia Powell had 10 points, 10 rebounds and five steals against Virginia City. Abby Sikora had eight points and Aleea Howe added seven. Cassie Dickenson had 12 rebounds and six points, and Hannah Coltrin pulled down nine rebounds.

In the second win, Sikora led the way with 11 and Shainey Vincent added eight points and six steals.

Dayton loses three

The Dust Devils lost three times over the weekend — 30-5 to Lovelock, 25-15 to Coral Academy and 37-10 to Yerington.

Kim Torres had 11 points in the tournament and she also had 11 steals. Taylor Kinney had 19 rebounds for the weekend and Emma Cowee contributed nine points and nine steals.
