Voltaire Canyon fire contained in Carson City

The Voltaire Fire has been fully contained as of 8 p.m., with crews in the mop up stage throughout the night, according to Fire Chief Sean Slamon.

Slamon said mop up crews will be on throughout the night, and that most of the resources have been relieved.

"Our crews have been awesome, homes we thought we would lose they saved," Slamon said. "It was absolutely incredible."

Slamon said they will have a definite estimate of total acreage Wednesday but estimates over 100 acres burned.

Homes and businesses were threatened Tuesday in South Carson City after a massive brush fire broke out in the afternoon.

The fire sparked near Voltaire Canyon Road around 1:30 p.m. due to a lightning strike in the area.

Multiple residences and business along Curry Street from Voltaire Canyon Road to Moses Street, including the Galaxy Theater and the Carson Indian Colony were threatened.

As of 5:30 p.m., Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon said because of the hills and severe shifting winds, it was difficult to estimate how much had burned.

"It is getting better," Slamon said. "It's not great yet, but we are doing better."

The Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center website posted 150 acres had burned as of 6:15 p.m. with about 25 percent containment.

The shifting winds caused a majority of problems for crews Slamon said, as it pushed flames back and forth towards structures, power lines and roads.

Crews shut down all the roads surrounding the area from Curry and Voltaire to Curry and Wialaki streets and multiple command centers were set up across the area.

"Fire crews have done a great job of pushing the fire back up the hill and away from residences," said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong.

No structures had been destroyed nor had any injuries been sustained.

Multiple agencies including U.S. Forest Service, BLM, East Fork Fire Department and Truckee Meadows Fire Department responded to the Voltaire fire as well as several other lightning-caused fires across Carson.

The Carson City Fire Department has been called to a 150 acres wildfire burning in Voltaire Canyon above Voltaire Canyon Road. Carson City Fire says the fire is about 25 percent contained by 6:30 p.m.

Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon said about 4:45 p.m. that crews "have done a good job of pushing the fire back from homes, though they are still threatened."

Shifting winds are causing difficulties for firefighters in gaining the upper hand on the fire.

No structures have been lost.

Voluntary evacuations took place in the Koontz Lane, Clearview, Curry Street areas. Mandatory evacuation took place by the Carson City Sheriff's Office to residents on Voltaire Canyon Road. The Galaxy Theater and SaveMart were evacuated.

There also is a voluntary evacuation order for the Carson Indian Colony.

Clearview and Curry, and more roads in the area are closed.

The fire started about 1:30 p.m. and was caused by lightning, Slamon said.

State and federal resources are responding.
