After dropping an 8-7 heartbreaker in the first game, the Carson Senators bounced back with a vengeance to beat Galena, 18-3, in the nightcap to gain a softball split Friday afternoon at Carson High.
The Senators won’t have long to savor the win. They travel to Reno to play the Huskies at 10 a.m. today in a rain make-up.
“I’m glad we were able to get one after that first game,” coach Shane Quilling said. “We battled back in the first game, but we weren’t ready to play. Kassidy (Cooley) hit some hard balls in the second game and had the homer in the first, and Camryn (Quilling) hit the ball well in the second game.
“It was nice to see Jailene come back and pitch well in the second game, and Lauren did a nice job both games.”
After spotting Galena a run in the first, Carson came back with three in the bottom of the inning.
Kailee Luschar singled and scored on Nicole Brown’s double to right-centerfield. Two errors and a single by Camryn Quilling accounted for the other two runs.
Carson added four in the second, one on Brown’s infield out, one on Jailene Salceido’s single and two on Bella Kordonowy’s homer.
In the third, Carson exploded for eight runs to take a commanding 15-1 lead. The big blow in the inning was a three-run homer by Quilling. Brown and Salceido added run-scoring singles. Quilling’s double in the bottom of the fourth ended the game on the 15-run rule, as the Grizzlies failed to retire a batter.
Brown, Salceido, Kassidy Cooley and Quilling all had three hits in the nightcap, and Faith Bigelow contributed two. Brown finished with a team-best four RBI.
In the opener, Carson fell behind 8-2, but scored five late in the game to make it 8-7 thanks to a solo homer by Cooley and a two-run pinch-hit homer by Bigelow.
Simpson had two singles in the first game.
“That first game we weren’t ready to play,” Quilling said. “I think they thought they could just show up and play.”
BASEBALL Reno edges Tigers
MINDEN — Three pitchers combined to limit Douglas to three hits and left fielder Sawyer Jaksick made a home run-saving catch in the sixth inning to help Reno pull out a key 5-3 Northern 4A victory Friday afternoon at Tiger Field.
Douglas (7-4 league, 9-6 overall) was tied 2-2 before Reno (8-3 league, 17-4 overall) scored twice in the fourth inning to take the lead for good and then added an insurance run in the seventh.
Reno moved into a tie for first-place with Galena in the league standings, while Douglas had its four-game win streak snapped and dropped into a tie for third-place with Spanish Springs and McQueen.
Drake Vestbie came out of the bullpen to pitch 2.2 scoreless innings and earn the save for the Huskies’ Kurt Pitha (4.1 innings). Vestbie allowed one hit and struck out five of the 10 batters he faced.
Douglas had a shot to tie the score in the sixth when Tristan Futch hit a long drive to left field that Jaksick reached up and caught as he crashed into the fence.
Hadyn Brown doubled down the right field line for Douglas with one out in the seventh inning, however, Reno closed out the game on Christian Chamberlain’s diving catch of a short fly ball in center field.
Chamberlain slugged a two-run homer to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
The Tigers answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, sparked by Haden Brown’s pop fly single. Kindel Isham delivered a two-out RBI single to keep Douglas within 4-3 in the fourth.
Carson visits McQueen
The Senators will go for a series split and a .500 league record when they visit McQueen today at 11 a.m.
The Lancers won the first game of the two-game series 4-2 on Wednesday. Bryce Moyle, Carson’s ace, will start on the hill.

Dayton girls 2nd
at county meet
FERNLEY — The Dayton girls finished second and the boys were third at Thursday’s Lyon County Championships at Fernley High School.
Fernley won the girls with 53 followed by Dayton (92), Yerington (53), Smith Valley (29) and Silver Stage (2). Fernley won the boys with 158 followed by Yerington (79), Dayton (54), Silver Stage (32) and Smith Valley (21).
Ashley Mason had a big day, winning the long jump (16-8, PR) and the triple jump (34-9, PR). She teamed with Macie Callan, sister Ashley, and Sydney Strickler to win the 800 relay in 1:55.91.
The Masons, Strickler and Grace Wells took second in the 1600 relay with a 4:35.59. Kassie Strong won the shot put (29-6, PR) and the discus (98-7). Rebecca Mason (high jump, 4-8), Strickler (100, 14.22), Callan (200, 29.68) and Perla Vega (long jump- 12-10 1/2) all took seconds in their respective events. Rebecca Mason had a third in the 400 (67.12).
JJ Ply was a double winner for the boys, clearing 6-2 in the high jump and winning the 110 high hurdles in 15.26.
He also teamed with Carson Crosby, Chase Peterson and Jeffery Walker to win the 1600 relay in 3:47.42.
Walker took second in the 300 hurdles with a 44.06 and he teamed with Carson Crosby, Giacomo Deidda and Peterson to finish second in the 400 relay (49.32). Crosby was second in the 400 with a 54.90. Jason Logan took fourth in the 1600 (5:21.38) and fourth in the 3200 (11:49.11).

Invite today
The Carson High track team will head to McQueen High for today’s Northwest Invite.
Action gets underway at 9 a.m.
The Senators lost Valerie Sue Meyer for the season. Meyer injured her knee playing soccer, and won’t return.
Coach Robert Maw said Dylan Mayo, the team’s long and triple jumper, hurt his ankle earlier this week at the conference meet at Hug, and his status is unknown for today.
