Shipley takes the loss in complete game effort

ROUND ROCK — The Reno Aces dropped their second consecutive game, falling to the Round Rock Express by a 4-3 score on Saturday night at Dell Diamond. Aces right-hander Braden Shipley logged his second career complete game, but the Express hit three solo home runs off the former Nevada Wolf Pack star, including two by right fielder Ryan Strausborger. Reno had several chances to provide more run support for the righty, but they hit just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

The visitors got on the board early, as center fielder Todd Glaesmann led off the game with a double to right field before scoring three batters later on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Sócrates Brito. Round Rock tied the game in the third as Edwin Garcia’s RBI single scored catcher Patrick Cantwell, who started the frame with a double.

The Express took a 2-1 lead in the fourth, when Strausborger followed his walk-off single from Friday with a solo home run to left field. The Round Rock right fielder continued his hot hitting two innings later, when he again led off the frame with a homer to left to extend his team’s lead to two.

Brito and left fielder Ed Lucas hit back-to-back singles to start the seventh, and Zach Borenstein tied the game two batters later with a two-run double to left before advancing to third on the throw. Round Rock regained a 4-3 lead in the eighth with its third solo home run of the game, this one from second baseman Drew Robinson.

Shipley recorded Reno’s second complete game of the season, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits with no walks and six strikeouts. He went the distance for the first time since July 3, 2015, for Mobile at Jackson. The former first-round draft pick has walked just one batter in his last five starts since May 6.

Second baseman Mike Freeman went 2-for-4 to notch his 15th multi-hit game of the year, while Borenstein recorded his fifth multi-RBI game.

The Aces and Express continue their four-game series with Game 3 on today, when first pitch is slated for 11:05 a.m. PT. Reno will send righty Edgar Garcia (1-2, 7.31) to the bump, while right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez (1-5, 5.55) will toe the rubber for Round Rock.
