Prep roundup: Fallon edges Dayton baseball in playoffs

ELKO — Fallon scored an unearned run in the sixth inning to edge Dayton, 5-4, in the first round of the Northern 1A regional baseball tournament Thursday at Spring Creek.

The loss drops Dayton into a consolation bracket game today at 8 a.m. against either Fernley, South Tahoe or Elko. Dayton needs a win to stay alive.

“For a young team without any playoff experience, I was proud of our effort against the defending state champion,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said.

“We just have to learn to perform in pressure situations on the biggest of stages.”

Fallon took a 4-0 lead after two-run outbursts in the first and second, but Dayton answered with four in the third on a triple by Jesse Schmidt and a two-run homer by Gage Duke. Fallon went ahead with the aforementioned unearned run in the sixth to take a one-run lead. Dayton went out 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh,

Schmidt and Zach Woitas had two hits apiece, while Nick Hein, Trevor Burrows, Kacey Cram and Duke had a hit each.

Trevor Burrows picked up the loss, allowing three earned runs and five hits in six innings.
