Accident: While returning from a fire yesterday morning, Mr. Isaac Conner had his foot badly crushed by the Curry engine running over it. Another accident: While returning from the fire yesterday morning, Mr. J. S. had a few of his teeth knocked out, by coming in collision with the brakes of the Curry Engine while the engine was rapidly rounding a corner.

The party of destruction: A new thing in politics, and one that could never have been incubated outside of Ormsby County, is to have a party whose main idea is based upon the destruction of the business interests of the community. The platform of the party can be summed up as, “The driving from the county of every man that helped to develop it.”

100 years ago

A fire broke out at the state university in Reno this morning in Manzanita Hall, which is the girls’ dormitory. The fire was extinguished about noon with an estimate damage of between $4,000 to $5,000. The cause of the fire is unknown.

70 years ago

An informal meeting concerning the formation of a school lunch program was held this morning in Governor Vail Pittman’s executive chamber in the state Capitol building. The meeting follows adoption of a recent act passed by Congress granting money to the state for school lunch programs.

Four parched Nevada stock-growing counties were designated drought disaster areas by a state committee Friday, in the first step to make them eligible for special federal help.

Harvey N. Dondero, a Nevada educator for five decades and former deputy state superintendent of public instruction, died Thursday. He was 76.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
