Community Spotlight: Lehman’s terms: She takes 1st in breakaway roping at local rodeo

Lindy Lehman pulled out a first-place finish in a closely contested breakaway roping recently during the Carson-Douglas High School Rodeo held at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

Hosted by the Carson-Douglas High School Rodeo Club over two days (March 26-27), the event was part of the Nevada High School Rodeo Association season that extends through May.

Lehman, a Carson High School senior, won a breakaway roping competition in which six-tenths of a second separated the top three finishers. Lehman was clocked in 3.160 seconds, followed by Humboldt County’s Julianne Montero (3.730) and Bailey Reynolds (3.760).

Blaine Pinochi, a Douglas High School senior, captured third in tie-down roping on Saturday with his time of 16.920. For the season, Pinochi is 14th in the state tie-down roping standings.

Brynn Lehman had a busy Saturday schedule as she placed third in pole bending, sixth in goat tying and eighth in barrel racing. She also placed fourth in pole bending on Sunday and ranks fourth in the event for the season.

Lindy Lehman placed fifth in both goat tying and barrel racing on Sunday. She also placed sixth in breakaway roping.

Grace Rawlins placed eighth in pole bending on Saturday and 13th on Sunday.

The Nevada State Finals Rodeo will be held May 25-30 in Fallon. The top three finishers in each event from Nevada qualifies for the National High School Finals Rodeo July 17-23 in Gillette, Wyo.

PGA tourney looking

for volunteers

RENO – Golf fans have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the PGA TOUR as volunteers for the 18th annual Barracuda Championship.

“Without the help of our amazingly dedicated volunteers this event would not be possible,” said Chris Hoff, tournament director for the Barracuda Championship. “It’s a great opportunity for golf fans or those learning about the sport to get up close to well known players like J.J. Henry and Geoff Ogilvy and learn how a tournament operates.”

Volunteers for the region’s only PGA TOUR event are offered a variety of opportunities including player and caddie transportation, score keeping, serving as course marshals and other key roles in making the tournament a continued success. Additionally, volunteers are a part of an organization that has donated more than $3.2 million to local charities.

Volunteering costs $55 which includes the required uniform with exclusive branded material, a meal during each shift, tournament tickets and invitations to the volunteer appreciation parties, valued at more than $200. As always, military veterans, active duty, guard and reserve, first responders and high school students can volunteer at no cost.

Owens, Johnson

tie for 1st place

John Owens and Kevin Johnson each fired a net 67 to tie for first place in Flight 1 at the recent Senior Men’s Club event at Silver Oak Golf Course.

John Meyer was third with a 69, while Jim Sapien, Jim Silsby and William Kapczynski tied for fourth with 70s.

Jay Wiggins won Flight 2 with a net 64, two shots better than Eric Moormann and Freeman Johnson. Kelly Pingel took fourth with a 68.

• Adam Koehm and Lee Plemel tied for first in Flight 1 during March 20 play. Both had a 69. Dennis Baughman and Gary Gamba shot 70s to tie for third. Wiggins won Flight 2 with a 60, five shots ahead of Freeman Johnson and 11 in front of Ron Tamori, Shane McInnerny and Shawn Akers.

Hetherton wins at

Empire Ranch

Bill Hetherton carded a net 64 to win Flight A at the recent Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club stroke play tournament.

Geoff Swann was second with a 65, while Dave Ziegler, Gary Dalen and Tom Sawyer tied for third with 69s. In Flight B, Skip Yokot won with a 65, a shot better than Tom Teders, Fred Perdomo was third with a 69. Dan Rodgers won Flight C with a 55, three shots better than Bob Pluth. Marty Martinez was third with a 62.

Davis captures flight

at Carson Valley

Mike Davis shot a net 67 to win Flight A at Carson Valley Men’s Club tournament last week. Charles Poe was second with a 70, one shot better than Dan Essary.

Matt Budjako took Flight B with a 68, one shot better than Jim Pillsbury and two better than Augie Martinez. Gary Cartsen won Flight C with a 69, two better than John Carey and four better than Jim Arens.

Gourmand Scramble event

set for June 5

The 22nd annual Golf Gourmand Scramble at Eagle Valley Golf Course is set for June 5.

The cost is $150 per golfer, which includes golf with cart, breakfast buffet, tee prizes and lunch after the round. Each team gets a prize. The tournament benefits the Community Counseling Center.

Booster tournament set

for May 7-8 at Edgewood

The 29th annual Booster Club Golf Tournament, a major fund-raiser for South Tahoe and Whittell high schools, is set for May 7 and 8 at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. Entry fee is $145 which includes golf, cart and lunch. If you want to play both days, it’s $260. Trophies will be awarded to the top three teams each day.

Escape for Prison

Hill race set

The Escape from Prison Hill races (half marathon, 10k and 5k) is slated for April 23.

The half marathon presents a challenging trail run with great views of the Sierra Nevada and Nevada valleys. The 10k race has less challenging terrain and a shorter distance. The 5K is a good climb with a fast descent. The men’s and women’s overall winners will receive a unique prize. All half-marathon finishers get a medal and all participants receive a pair of buffs. There are also random prize drawings during the race.
