CHS notebook: Schulz, Huling back on field for the Senators

Senior Ian Schulz (11) and junior Tyler Huling (7) are back in action for the Senators after missing a couple of games.

Senior Ian Schulz (11) and junior Tyler Huling (7) are back in action for the Senators after missing a couple of games.

Carson High got two players — tight end/defensive end Ian Schulz and wingback/linebacker Tyler Huling — back from the injury list on Friday.

Schulz, who injured an ankle against Reed in the season-opening loss to Reed, and Huling, who sprained his neck against North Valleys, were limited to just offense by coach Blair Roman in Friday’s 58-0 Homecoming demolishing of Hug.

Schulz had a catch for 18 yards while Huling carried twice for 21 yards.

“It (the ankle) felt good,” Schulz said.

“We didn’t run a lot of plays to my side. We were running mostly to the weak side. I’m probably 80 percent right now. I usually heal better on the weekends. I still can’t go at a full-out sprint.”

“I felt nervous when I first went out there,” Huling said. “Once the adrenalin got going, I didn’t worry about it too much.”

Roman said it was nice to get both players back.

Both are going to be needed as Carson starts league play next week at home against Damonte Ranch.

“Ian felt good all week,” Roman said. “Hopefully he’ll be completely healthy by next week. I limited him to offense, but we can also use him on defense. He is a heckuva good defensive end.

“I only played Tyler on offense. He might see some action on defense next Friday.”

Big night for Lewis

Carson linebacker Ikela Lewis had an exciting night for three reasons.

Not only did Carson win handily, but he was named Homecoming King, and his aunt and his grandmother saw him play varsity for the first time.

“My grandmother came from San Francisco, and it was the first time she’d ever seen me play,” Lewis said. “My aunt lives here in Carson, and it’s the first time she’s seen me play (varsity). It was nice to have the family all come to the game.

“It was awesome (winning Homecoming King). It’s a blessing.”

Easy night for Wallace

Junior wingback Greg Wallace returned a kick-off 11 yards to start the game, but that was the extent of his action on Friday.

“His leg has been sore, and we’re not sure what is wrong,” Roman said.

“If it had been a tight game we would have played him. Hopefully he’ll be OK for next week. Elijah (Fajayan) stepped up.”

Fajayan carried three times for 35 yards, including a 13-yard scoring run in the second quarter.

Another first for Rogers

Last week Spencer Rogers had his first interception of the season, and Friday night he scored his first TD when he returned Ja’lawnie Thomas’ fumble 21 yards for Carson’s final score of the night.

Next up is Damonte

The Senators’ toughest Sierra League game is their opener next Friday at home against Damonte Ranch, which hammered North Valleys on Friday.

The so-called experts figured the Sierra League was a two-team race between Carson and the Mustangs, who are 2-3 thus far. Each squad handled North Valleys, and each squad lost to Reed.
