Feb. 9, 1955: Widening of Carson St. to be discussed

A special meeting between city trustees and the state highway department has been tentatively scheduled to discuss widening of Carson St.

The meeting was called at the request of the highway department as a public hearing on the proposed widening of the street which would make it four lanes wide and change the present system of parking to parallel.

The present design the highway department is working on, calls for widening the street to 64 feet to allow four 11 1/2 feet traffic lanes and 9 feet of parking space on each side of the street.

The extra width added to the street would mean about 4 feet taken off the present sidewalk area. The street has a dedicated width of 80 feet, and if the 4 feet were taken off, should leave 8 feet of sidewalk on both sides of the street.

This continues the Appeal’s review of news stories and headlines during its Sesquicentennial year.
