Nevada baseball able to out-’Whitt’ UC Davis

RENO — Junior Adam Whitt of Carson City retired five straight batters to help the Nevada baseball team hold on to a 7-6 victory over UC Davis on Tuesday at Peccole Park.

The Wolf Pack continued its best start in program history, improving to 11-1 on the season while remaining an unbeaten 7-0 at home.

Junior Ryan Howell hit a three-run homer in the first, improving to first nationally in home runs with six on the season. The Wolf Pack stormed out to 5-0 lead for the second straight game before Whitt denied an Aggie rally to earn his fifth save of the season.

Senior LHP Barry Timko (2-0) earned the win on the mound in his longest outing of the season. The San Bruno, Calif., native allowed five hits and four runs while striking out three in six full innings of work.

Whitt tallied his first career hit in the bottom of the eighth in his first plate appearance of the season. Whitt retired the side in order with groundout, pop fly-out and strikeout in the top of the ninth to secure the victory.
