The Mint lot secured. Gov. Johnson sent to Virginia on Saturday and procured Job’s signature to the deed for the U.S. Mint lot, about which there has been so much trouble. The work on the Mint building will probably be commenced early in the coming month.

130 years ago

Yesterday’s runaway. Yesterday afternoon, a team driven by Mrs. Correcco, ran away on Main Street taking fright in front of Lilienfeld’s store. There were several children in the wagon, and Mrs. Correcco tried hard to hold the lines, but the horses got the upper hand and dumped the contents of the wagon at Ozark corner.

100 years ago

Unsightly object removed. In line with the Appeal’s slogan to clean up and remove objectionable sights form the streets the Raycrafts had the unsightly sign board removed on Carson Street there for the last generation or two and carted to the scrap pile.

70 years ago

According to word received today, John M. Laxalt, USNR, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dominic Laxalt of this city, has been transferred to the Atlantic fleet’s naval training station in Newport, R.I.

Scuba divers were continuing their search for two youths feared lost in the depths of Devils Hole, a shaft in the Nevada desert filled with glass-clear 90-degree water.

Firefighters have knocked out a fire line around most of a 1,000-acre fire that threatened the Virginia Highlands subdivision near Geiger Grade.
