Manogue too much for Carson girls

Carson High’s helter-skelter style of play causes problems for a lot of teams.

Bishop Manogue isn’t one of them.

Bishop Manogue blitzed Carson’s mistake-prone offense for 28 points in a span of less then five minutes in the first quarter en route to an easy 82-42 Sierra League win Friday night at Morse Burley Gym.

The loss dropped Carson to 5-5 in league play and 10-10 overall. The Senators visit league-leading Douglas Tuesday at 5:15.

Carson didn’t execute against Manogue’s pressure at all. Carson turned the ball over 39 times, leading to 33 Manogue points. Seven of those errors came during the aforementioned first-quarter blitz, leading to 12 Manogue points.

Carson coach Nate Tolbert blamed his team’s inability to get back on defense, and the plethora of offensive errors.

“We didn’t get back,” Tolbert said. “Manogue is a talented team, and they took advantage of that. I don’t think we made them run their offense (early) because they were scoring in transition.

“You can’t turn the ball over 39 times like we did, either. We didn’t play to our potential. I thought we played a decent game, but you need more than that to beat them. We started to hang our heads tonight. When we play with belief and confidence ... “

A 3-pointer and basket by Maddie Preston (12 points) gave Carson its final lead of the night, 7-5, with five minutes left in the opening quarter.

That set up Manogue’s 28-8 run in the final 4:47. If you were a Carson fan you would have been better off covering your eyes, because things got ugly in a hurry. It was 33-15 at the quarter, and the Senators were done.

Six different Manogue players scored in the onslaught, but Breezi Thorn, arguably the best player in Northern Nevada, scored 12 during the run, while Hannah Bingham scored five and Katie Turner added four.

Manogue, thanks to a 17-11 surge in the second quarter, walked off the floor with a 50-26 lead at the half.

Carson scored the first three points of the third quarter on a free throw by Aikins and a basket by Preston, but a 12-0 run by Manogue made it 62-29 with 2:26 left in the period. Tawni Henderson and Holt hit 3-pointers and Christa Young had a three-point play.

NOTES: The Miners did a nice job defensively against Michelle Perry, holding her to just one basket. She had scored double figures in the last two games ...Tolbert and Manogue coach Craig Holt had to be separated at the end of the game by CHS officials. Tolbert was unhappy Breezi Holt came back into the game after it was decided and Manogue pressed throughout the monster lead.
