Community sports: Carson Middle School wins hoops title

The Carson Middle School eighth-grade basketball team won the Tah-Neva championship recently with a 3-0 record.

Carson opened with a 32-24 win over South Tahoe Middle School, beat Sage Ridge 31-20 in the semifinals and topped Eagle Valley 30-20 in the championship game.

The leading scorers for the tournament were Eric Tomita with 34 points and Dougie Hostler with 24 points.

The team was coached by Rob Hostler.

The Carson Valley Girls Softball Association will be holding signups at the Douglas County Community and Senior Center four times during the month of January.

Jan. 9 from noon to 4 p.m.

Jan. 13 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Jan. 21 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Jan. 23 from noon to 2 p.m.

In order to sign up, you must pre-register at carsonvalleyfastpitch.com. New players must bring copies of their birth certificate and payment. Registration fees are $80 for ages 4 through 6 and $85 for ages 7 and above. The maximum rate for a family is $160. A $10 discount is being offered for those making payment at the Jan. 9 registration. The divisions are 6u, 8u, 10u, 12u, 14u, 16u and 18u. Eligibility is based on your age as of Dec. 31, 2015. Grabow honored at UOP

STOCKTON, Calif. – Senior cross country runner Becky Grabow, a Sierra Lutheran High graduate, was selected as the Tigers’ Competitor of the Month for November.

Only nine student-athletes earn the distinction every year at UOP, and Grabow is the third to garner the award during the 2015-16 academic year. The Competitor of the Month Award is given each month to a Pacific athlete who demonstrates unusual or remarkable competitive effort, focus, and discipline.

During November, Grabow closed out her final season at Pacific with a trip to the NCAA West Regional race where she lead the way to the team’s highest finish in program history. For the last four years, Grabow has been of workhorse for the team, not only for workouts but she has also made sure Tigers’ annual high school event runs smoothly. She has been instrumental in planning recruiting weekends. In addition to her time training and studying, Grabow is a special education major who spends her time helping kids with special needs.
