Local sports roundup: Reid wins two events at Big George meet

MINDEN — Corey Reid ran to gold medals in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and the 800 on Saturday to highlight performances by the short-handed Carson Senators during the eighth annual Big George Invitational hosted by Douglas High School.

While most of Carson’s squad stayed home due to rain earlier in the day, Reid won both of the events he entered within an hour of each other. The senior dashed 39.17 in the 300 hurdles, the fastest time in Northern Nevada so far this season. Reid later won his first 800 race this season in 2:01.37.

“That’s the nice thing about Corey being a decathlete — and one of the best in the United States, no less — he gives us a lot of options for regionals,” Carson coach Robert Maw said.

Douglas captured the girls team championship by a 111.5-98 score over Spring Creek.

Douglas senior Lindsey Adams, who signed a national letter of intent with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Monday, cut through a brisk wind to break her own school record and win the girls 3,200 meters in 12:25.0. Adams ran to first-place in the 1,600 with a 5:10.93 and capped off her day as she anchored the Tigers’ first-place 4x400 relay team (along with Madison Cote, Lizzy Byrne and Kyla Hinnant) that ran 4:16.

Eveline Delgado of Carson finished second in the 3,200 with a time of 12:30.0.

Dayton’s Kaylee Turner was a double winner in the throws, as the senior hurled the discus 128-4 and came back with a 36-2 effort in the shot put. Turner came up big in the final round when she delivered a personal record by 6 inches and the best by a Northern Division IA thrower this season.

“She was over rotating — stepping in the bucket — on her first five throws,” Dayton coach Mike Paul said. “She got to the middle of the ring on that last throw and it paid off.”

Likewise, the Dust Devils’ Zach Hawley won the boys discus at the end of the day with a personal record throw of 164-5. Earlier, the junior took first-place in the shot put with a throw of 53-6-3/4.

Douglas sophomore Dawson Coman sped to first-place in the 100 meters with a 11.58 clocking, plus he combined with Joshua Gurule, Koby Hinnant and Nick Abreu to win the 4x100 relay in 44.68.

The Tigers’ John Munyan, Austin Coxall, Nolan Greth and Kaleb Morris won the 4x800 relay in 8:25.37.

Dayton senior Dallon Mendoza won the boys 400 by running his season-best time of 50.91. Mendoza, Tobias Tapley, Brandon Wood and Skyler Berntson also won the 4x200 relay (1:33.76).

Benji Ply placed second in the pole vault with a jump of 13-6 and third in the 110 high hurdles in 16.32. Jon Ply was fourth in the 110 highs in 16.77.

Elko won the boys team title with 95 points, followed by Douglas (91), Fallon (87.5) and Dayton (81).

For Division I schools, the Big George meet served as the final tune-up before the region meet, which begins next Saturday with prelims, followed by the finals on May 9 at Carson High’s Jim Frank Track and Field Complex. Dayton hosts the Lyon County Championships on Saturday.

JUNIOR COLLEGE SOFTBALL

WNC wins, holds on to No. 4 spot

EPHRAIM, Utah — After dropping two of the first three games to Snow College by two runs or less, the Western Nevada College softball team found the winning formula in the series finale Saturday morning.

WNC outscored Snow, 7-4, to avoid the series sweep in Ephraim, Utah. The win followed 2-0, 11-4 and 6-5 defeats to the Badgers on Friday.

With the victory, WNC remained in fourth place in the SWAC standings with a 14-21 record — one and a half games ahead of Snow. The Wildcats improved to 19-26 overall, with four games remaining against College of Southern Nevada.

The Wildcats will entertain the rival Coyotes at Edmonds Sports Complex, with doubleheaders scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Douglas sweeps

Seventh inning rallies were the difference twice on Saturday when Douglas swept a pivotal Northern Division I doubleheader at North Valleys.

Kaleb Foster hit 3-for-4 with an RBI during the Tigers’ three-run seventh inning in a 4-1 win in the opener. In game two, the Tigers scored twice in the seventh to come from behind for an 8-7 victory.

Douglas (8-12 conference, 8-15 overall) extended its win streak to six straight games with wins in eight of its last 10. North Valleys (5-15, 6-18) dropped into 10th place in the conference race.

Zac Davies singled Haydn Brown home with the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh and then came on to pitch with two outs in the bottom half of the inning and retired the side with the potential tying run on first base.

Foster hit 2-for-4 with a second-inning home run, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI.

Isaiah Schat pitched a complete game five-hitter in the opener to log his second win of the week. The sophomore left-hander pitched 6.1 innings to beat Wooster on Tuesday.

Truckee blanks Dayton

DAYTON — The Wolverines took advantage of Dayton’s bullpen in the sixth and seventh innings to grab a 5-0 win over the Dust Devils in the series finale on Saturday afternoon.

Mason Haines pitched five strong innings, leaving the game because of arm problems. Truckee scored three in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Dayton managed just three hits, one each by Dylan Baker, Jesse Schmidt and Haines.

“We got a solid outing from Mason,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said. “He complained of arm problems, so we had to go to our bullpen in the top of the sixth. They tacked on some insurance runs. We struggled offensively.

“We finally got the pitching and defense we’ve been looking for, but it takes all three phases to win ballgames.”

Carson plays South Tahoe Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Aces Ballpark, and wraps up the regular season in Elko on Friday and Saturday.

Carson rained out

The Carson-Galena doubleheader will be played Monday at Carson. The games are scheduled for 4 and 7 p.m., but Carson officials said Galena is interested in playing earlier. At press time, no change had been made.
