Ex-CHS stars lead Devils past Blue Jays

Two former Carson High stars — T.J. Thomsen and Jace Zampirro — combined to go 4-for-9 and drive in three runs to lead the Sun Devils to a 9-2 win over the Carson Blue Jays Friday night at Ron McNutt Field.

Carson, 5-7, returns to action Tuesday for a doubleheader against the Reno Knights starting at 3 p.m.

Thomsen went 2-for-4 and drove in a run, while Zampirro went 2-for-5 and drove in two runs.

The Sun Devils took a 2-0 lead in the first inning against Bryce Moyle.

Two errors and a single by Thomsen accounted for the runs.

The winners made it 3-0 in the third when Alec Leighton doubled and eventually scored on Thomsen’s sacrifice fly.

Carson sliced the deficit to 3-2 in the third when Cody Azevedo reached on an error and scored on a single by Josiah Pongasi. Moyle helped his own cause with a run-scoring single.

Both of those runs came off J.J. Harloff. Relievers Chase Hauder and Gehrig Parks combined for six innings of one-hit ball the rest of the way.

Carson did load the bases in the fourth on a hit batsman, a walk and single by Brandon Allen. However Terek Been struck out, Connor Leahy popped up and Jesse Lopez grounded out to end the inning.

Carson never got a runner to second base the rest of the way.

The Sun Devils scored two in the sixth, one in the seventh, one in the eighth and two in the ninth.

Pongasi had two hits to lead the Carson offense.
