Prep Roundup: Carson improves to 6-2 in league play

RENO — Cameron Price used his 6-foot 3-inch frame to score 18 points in Carson High’s 46-42 win over North Valleys on Friday night.

Carson was able to control the tempo and give the score low holding the Panthers to seven points in the second and third quarter as Carson took a 38-29 lead after three quarters.

“It was a defensive battle,” coach Carlos Mendeguia said. “We did a good job of controlling the tempo and, I think, frustrating them.”

Carson held Jalil Walker, who was averaging 25 points a game, to below his season average.

Kyle Steele added nine points, Alan Cohen added eight points and Kyle Denning chipped in seven to help compliment Price.

“(Price) did a good job of being aggressive on the boards tonight. We knew we would need him and he had a good game tonight,” Mendeguia said.

Carson is 6-2 in league heading into Tuesday’s game at home against rival Douglas. The game starts at 7 p.m.

VARSITY GIRLS

Sierra Lutheran 33, Excel Christian 16

Cali Benton scored 11 points to lead Sierra Lutheran to an easy victory Friday night. The Falcons built an 18-5 halftime lead in the win.

Natalie Echeverria and Amy Westre each added six points. Westre added 13 rebounds for the 7-10 Falcons.

Carson 65, North Valleys 57

RENO — Madison Preston scored 21 points to lead the Senators past the Panthers Friday night.

The Senators, 5-3 in league, led by double digits until NV went on a game-ending 7-2 run.

“When our press was working our offense was working,” Carson coach Nate Tolbert said.

Carly Bachmann added 16 points, Michelle Perry scored nine and Serena Miller six for the Senators, who host Douglas on Tuesday at 5:15.

Carson played without Gina Peacock, who was ill.

Dayton 55, Fernley 42

DAYTON — Taylor Ingersoll and Angela Sikora combined for 40 points, as Dayton won its first game of the season after 11 straight losses.

Ingersoll, the Dust Devils’ 6-4 center, scored 21, and Sikora added 19. Fifteen of Sikora’s points came on 3-pointers.

Fernley chopped Dayton’s lead to 42-34 with 6:28 left, but Ingersoll scored six straight points in the paint and Cheyanne Strong added a putback to make it 50-34. The Vaqueros never got closer than 13 the rest of the way.

JV GIRLS

Carson 40, North Valleys 27

Taylor Weddell scored 14 points and Brianna Alvarado added 13 in the Senators win.

The Senators did struggle, shooting 5-for-18 from the free throw line and 29 percent from the field.

Carson is 15-1 and plays rival Douglas on Tuesday.

Fernley 40, Dayton 18

Dayton played hard, but came up short. The Dust Devils played with only six girls. Kassie Strong led Dayton with six points.

Lauryn Bailey, Kassady Cowger and Kallie Strong each had four points.

JV BOYS

Carson 73, North Valleys 43

Julian Alvarado scored 16 points to lead the Carson JV team to an easy win. Eddie Duarte added 12 points and Jace Keema chipped in eight points. Carson is now 14-2.

FRESHMEN BOYS

The Dayton freshmen lost to Fernley 37-33 on Friday.
