The Carson wrestling team more than held its own during the first day of the Sierra Nevada Classic in Reno on Monday.

Four wrestlers are still alive heading into today’s final day of competition in the tournament, which features many of the top programs across the West Coast.

Brandon Basa (113 pounds), Brady O’Keefe (145) and Brady Rivera (220) all went 3-0 on Monday to advance to today’s championship quarterfinals. Nolan Shine (152) went 3-1 on Monday and can finish as high as third today.

As a team, Carson was in ninth place and was the second highest finishing Northern Nevada team on Monday. Carson had 85 points, one point ahead of Spanish Springs, which was in 10th with 84 points.

Carson was just two points behind Redwood and Shadow Ridge, who were in seventh with 87 points.

Lowry was sixth with 94.5 points. Servite of Southern California was in first with 132.5 points.

“We’re hoping all four guys can place and they have the capability to do so,” said Carson coach Paul Carter about his four wrestlers finishing in the top eight today. “Obviously that’s our goal for today to get as high as we can,” Carter said.

About his three wrestlers still alive for a title, Carter said, “All three guys looked real solid.”

Carson finished 10th at last year’s Sierra Nevada Classic. “Obviously our goal is to match or beat that,” Carter said.

The Senators had solid efforts throughout their lineup with many wrestlers going 2-2 or at least winning one match. “We’ve been wrestling well all day,” Carter said.

Other results for Carson included: 106 — Terin Keller 2-2; 120 — Kyle Ruedy 1-2; 126 — Spencer Rogers 2-2; 132 — Mason Mersino 2-2; 138 — Kellen McDermott 2-2; 152 — Austin Ruedy 1-2; 160 — Abel Carter 1-2; 170 — Alex Honeycutt 1-2; 182 — Connor Sievers 2-2; 195 — Corey Jasper 2-2; heavyweight — Sheldon Miller 1-2.
