Bonine accepts Louisiana position

Nevada Interscholastic Activities Executive Director Eddie Bonine has announced he’s stepping down in order to accept the same position as chief of interscholastic sports in Louisiana.

Bonine, 57, is due to be announced as executive director of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association on Saturday in New Orleans at the Superdome. The announcement is being held in conjunction with Louisiana’s state football championships.

Bonine is required to provide the NIAA with 90 days notice under the terms of his contract.

“Eddie has done a great job for student athletes and student leaders here in Nevada,” NIAA President Erin Cranor said in a release.

“The NIAA is in a good position to continue to support high school athletics and student leadership throughout our state.

“We understand this is a great opportunity for Eddie. We are sad to see him go, but we wish him the best.”

The NIAA will begin the process of filling the vacant position at its regularly scheduled winter meeting on Jan. 14-15 in Reno.

Bonine had held the NIAA post since Jan., 2007, when he succeeded Dr. Jerry Hughes. He now replaces Kenny Henderson, who was executive director of the LHSAA for seven years.

Bonine previously served as director of student services with the Washoe County School District, and before that, as principal of Fernley High School. He was also vice president of the NIAA Board of Control.

Bonine pitched in the Houston Astros organization from 1979-85 — after being drafted out of Grand Canyon College in Phoenix, Ariz. His son, Eddie Keith Bonine, pitched for the Detroit Tigers from 2008-10.
