ELKO — Carson High will not play again until Dec. 18, and one of the things coach Carlos Mendeguia will spend time on will be the Senators’ zone offense.
West High-Salt Lake City played a 2-3 zone against Carson, and the Senators didn’t handle it really well in a 56-52 loss Saturday at the Red Lion Invitational at Elko High School.
The loss dropped Carson to 1-2. Carson opens Northern Division I play Dec. 18 at home against Spanish Springs, and then hosts Hug the next night.
“We haven’t spent a lot of time working on it (zone offense),” Mendeguia said. “We didn’t attack it well. We didn’t attack the gaps. We hit some shots early, and then we started settling. They did a good job in their zone.”
Carson turned the ball over 15 times, nine fewer than in the loss to Elko.
Cameron Price and Asa Carter led the offense with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Jayden DeJoseph added nine and Kyle Steele seven. Tez Allen and Price each pulled down six rebounds.
Dayton snaps losing streak
TRUCKEE — Marcos Saylor scored 19 points and Dallon Mendoza and Jon Joiner added 14 apiece to lead Dayton past White Pine 71-49 in the seven-place game of the Truckee Tournament Saturday morning.
Julio Meza chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds. Joiner added nine caroms.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak and boosted Dayton to 2-3 overall.The Dust Devils open Northern 1A play Dec. 18 at home against Sparks.
“We’re going to be working on everything,” coach Jason Santos replied when asked what he would concentrate on before the next game. “We have so much to work on; a lot of little things.”
Virginia City rolls along
HAWTHORNE — Virginia City beat Pahrump, 60-44, and Bishop, 74-60, to conclude play in the Serpent Classic on Saturday.
The Muckers are off to a 4-1 start under new head coach Tom Mauer.
VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL
Carson wins twice
SPARKS — The Senators knocked off Palo Verde, 47-40, and Fernley, 45-29, to conclude play in the High Sierra Winter Classic Saturday at Spanish Springs.
The wins give Carson a 3-2 mark, 0-1 in league, entering Tuesday’s battle at 5:15 against Reed.
Against Palo Verde, Carson outscored the Las Vegas school, 29-18 in the second half, to gain control of the game. Maddie Preston led the way with 17 points and five rebounds, while Ivy Pembrook and Andrea Maffei added nine each. Maffei also pulled down four rebounds.
Against Fernley, Carson cruised to a 10-point first-half lead, 23-13. Coach Nate Tolbert went to his bench in the third quarter, and when Fernley started to cut ino the deficit, he want back to his starters.
Pembrook led Carson wth 13 and Michelle Perry added 12. Preston finished with six.
Smith Valley stops Dayton
HAWTHORNE — The Dust Devils finished the Serpent Classic with a 46-14 loss to Smith Valley on Saturday.
“We came in flat and were outrebounded,” said coach Kelly Frantz. We couldn’t take care of the ball, and it was disappointing after playing well on Friday. Our girls didn’t step up to the challenge today.”
No other information was provided.
JV GIRLS BASKETBALL
Carson edges Spring Creek
SPARKS — Josie Share drained two free throws with a minute left in the game to key Carson’s 50-49 win over Spring Creek Saturday at the High Sierra Winter Classic at Spanish Springs.
Carson is 3-1 entering Tuesday’s home game against Reed at 7 p.m.
Carson outscored Spring Creek 17-6 in the final period to wipe out a 43-33 deficit. Share finished with 19 and Camiell Simpson added 10 with Anya Woodbury tallying eight. Simpson injured her thumb, and coach Mike Petterson said he expects her to miss some time.
JV BOYS BASKETBALL
Fallon outlasts CHS in OT
RENO — Gurpreet Badhan scored 19 and Geraet Rauh added 15, but the Senators still dropped a 70-67 overtime decision in the Winter Challenge at Damonte Ranch.
Carson is 1-3.
FROSH BOYS BASKETBALL
Senators drop two
RENO — Carson dropped two Winter Challenge games, losing 42-34 to McQueen and 43-35 to North Valleys.
Derek Barry scored 13 against McQueen, while Bryson Keller and Daniel Morrison scored eight each in the North Valleys game.
JV WRESTLING
Two CHS wrestlers win
RENO — Ethan Lepire (106) and Alex Estrada (160) took home championships to lead Carson at Saturday’s Hug JV Takedown. Both wrestlers went 5-0.
Jesse Case (160) went 4-1, losing to Estrada in the finals. Austin Rudy went 3-2 at 170 pounds and took third.
