The Carson High girls soccer team played on even terms for one half with Northern California power Montgomery of Sata Rosa, but a five-minute span in the second half proved costly.
Carson gave up three goals in the final 40 minutes and fell 4-0 in its season-opening game Friday at Carson.
Carson coach Greg Lehman noted his team was trying out different formations and trying different players in various positions throughout the game.
Carson almost took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a shot by Mayra Oliveras from about 25 yards from the side just outside of the goal box. The shot appeared to be heading into the net, but the Montgomery goalie made an outstanding save to punch the ball over the crossbar.
Carson goalie Kimberly Reyes also made an outstanding save in the first half on a ball right in front of the net. The Senators had another excellent chance to score in the first half when Nahim Gutierrez sent a long pass to Oliveras breaking to the goal, but Oliveras was wide with her shot. Montgomery scored on a defensive mistake to take a 1-0 halftime lead. Montgomery went on to score three goals in a five-minute span in the second half to take control.
