Electric wire: Some schemer in Virginia City proposes to connect the county safe to the telegraph office by means of electric wire ... it will ring a bell whenever a county official gets within grabbing distance. Virginia taxpayers lost $8,000 that walked off a few weeks ago.

All sorts: The ponds around Carson were crowded with skaters. The mills at the Lake are closed for the season. Miss Ida Spooner arrived from the Lake yesterday.

Sgt. Leon Etchart of Carson City was among the boys from Nevada who attended a reunion and dinner at the American Red Cross in London.

Panamint: A 629-pound ball of Nevada silver is headed for Philadelphia to be made into 20,000 Nevada centennial medallions. Most of the silver will come back to Nevada as medallions to be sold during the state’s centennial next year. Many years ago, silver was found in the Panamint mountain range and could be freighted out of the mountains but at high risk of being hijacked by bandits. State Sens. William Stewart and John P. Jones, owners of the Panamint Mining Co., milled the silver into 750-pound balls so a thief would have a devil of a time carting it away.

Remembering: Twenty years after the assassination, mourners filed past the body of John F. Kennedy at the Capitol Rotund. American leaders gathered again to celebrate his life. House Speaker Thomas O’Neill and Senate GOP leader Howard Baker recalled Kennedy’s grace, wisdom and wit ... and above all else he invigorated America with new hope and vitality.
