COMMUNITY: Local black belts excel in Las Vegas

Taekwondo Black belts from Chi Kwan Taekwondo in Carson City along with their instructor won five medals at the 2013 US Open Taekwondo Championships in Las Vegas recently.More than 2,500 black belt athletes from 76 countries participated in this annual international event. Medal winners were Grandmaster Chi (Gold), Girish Pandit (team coach), Natalia Filson (silver), Christina Jackson (silver), Varun Pandit (bronze) and Vidhi Pandit (bronze). K of C free throwwinners honoredThe Knights of Columbus held its District Free Throw Championship in Gardnerville recently. Local winners included 10-year- old boys winner Anderson Jensen, and 11- year- old boys champ Brayden Marler. Hannah Hodorowicz won the 12-year-old girls division. Johnny Lockard and Sophia Ruedy were the 13-year-old winners. In the 14-year-old bracket, Ann Ji Hodorowicz won the girls division and Rudolfo Velasco won the boys division. The winners will compete at the regional championship to be held at Bishop Manogue High School on March 16th. Liebendorfer leads SSGA to Level 4 crownThe Silver State Gymnastics Academy’s competitive girls team competed last weekend at the High Sierra Springfest meet.Gracie Walt was the highest placing Level 3 by winning vault and placing second on beam. At Level 4 in the 6-8 division, Elle Liebendorfer once again won the all-around title (AA) by taking the gold medal on bars and floor. Emily Lewis finished second place AA by winning first on beam and second on bars and floor. Right behind them was Rosalia Daulerio who took home the bronze AA medal by placing third on vault and bars. Elianna King won the gold medal on vault and third on beam and floor. In the 9-year-old division, Alycia Hellwinkel won vault and beam to capture the silver AA medal. Their outstanding performances, coupled with their teammates efforts, won the level four team trophy for SSGA. At Level 5, Isabella Daulerio won gold on bars and had a solid meet along with the other girls, to win the second-place team award. Lily Reid was the lone Level 6 for SSGA and took home the silver AA medal by winning first place on bars and second on floor. O’Keefe is a member of the Carson High School squad.
