ROUNDUP: WNC gets its sweep one day late

SALT LAKE CITY - Western Nevada College swept first-place Salt Lake Community College, 10-6 and 4-3, Saturday afternoon in a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader.

WNC finished in second place in the SWAC, but will get a first-round bye in the upcoming conference tournament, which starts Wednesday.

WNC will play Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The top two teams in the conference advance to the district tournament.

In the opener, Cole Ferguson swung the big bat. He went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs with two doubles and a homer. Mike Umscheid went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Chris Woolley went 3-for-4 and drove in a run.

WNC outhit Salt Lake 14-6. Evan Parker picked up the win, working 2 1/3 innings of relief.

In the nightcap, WNC grabbed a 4-3 win, scoring all of its runs in the first inning.

Rayne Raven and Woolley accounted for all the runs with homers.

Woolley went 2-for-4.

Brandon Jackson worked four innings to get the win.

WNC finished the regular season 42-13.


SWIMMING

Carson has tough day in the pool

It was a tough day in the pool for Carson High's swim teams at the High Desert Invitational at the Carson Aquatic Center.

The Carson boys finished sixth (last) with 220 points, well behind Douglas which won with 421 points. The Carson girls took fifth with 246. Douglas won with 475 points.

The Carson boys failed to win a single event. Gary Showalter had the best finish, placing second in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.95). Zach White was third in the 100 free (54.07) and Tim Grunert was sixth in the 200 IM (2:14.70). Monte Howell was sixth in the 200 free (2:16.82).

Carson was fourth in the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay.

On the girls side, Abi Pittman won the 500 free in 5:38.31. Elizabeth Everist was third in the 100 free at 58.58, Sophie Holmes was fourth in 2:31.27 and Danielle Stanka was fifth in the 500 free in 5:59.50. Alex Schlager was sixth in the 200 free in 2:26.36, while Charlee Bradley was sixth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.46.

The Carson girls were third in the 200 medley relay.


JC SOFTBALL

WNC gets swept

TWIN FALLS, Idaho - College of Southern Idaho swept a doubleheader from Western Nevada, 6-4 and 7-0, Saturday afternoon.

Jordan Thomas hit two solo homers to lead WNC, while Melanie Pfeiffer went 2-for-4. Jenny Quam, Taleas Marble doubled home a run and Niki DiSera went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Wildcats were one-hit in the nightcap, as Pfeiffer got the only hit, a single in the third.
