Prep roundup: Carson wins final game of tourney

The Carson girls basketball team ended the Bay Area West Coast Jamboree with a 65-52 over Clovis North. Carson used strong man defense to jump out to 25-11 lead after the first quarter.Savannah Smith scored 15 points to lead the team. Madison Preston scored 12 points. Elena Thurman scored 11 points and Gina Peacock added 10 points. Coach Nathan Tolbert credited Peacock for strong defense.“We made things happen on defense,” Tolbert said. “We rotated on defense and anticipated the way I knew they could.”Tolbert said the momentum will help as the team prepares to get back into league play.“It was a definitely a statement,” he said. “We are feeling good, now we are ready to take it into league.”Carson hosts Hug at 1:30 p.m. Friday before traveling to Manogue on Saturday. VARSITY BOYSMIRA COSTA 50, CARSON 27The Carson boys basketball team ended the San Diego Holiday Classic with a 50-27 loss to Mira Costa on Saturday.Coach Carlos Mendeguia said the Senators ran into a “buzz saw” on Saturday. “They were big, quick and just a good, well-rounded team,” Mendeguia said. “We couldn’t deal with their size and speed.”Carson also played with starter Rafe King, who missed the game with a shoulder injury. Mendeguia said he expects King to be ready for Friday’s game.Leading Carson was Matt Nolan with nine points. Kyle Denning added five points. During Friday’s win over LaMirada, Calif., Nolan led the team with 23 points. King added 11 points and Kyle Steele scored seven. Mendeguia credited Nolan for controlling the tempo and beating LaMirada’s pressure in the fourth quarter.“(The tournament) was a good learning experience for us,” Mendeguia said. “It showed up that we have to step up our level of play. It was a good team experience to prepare us for league play.”Carson hosts Hug at 3 p.m. Friday, before traveling to Manogue on Saturday.JV BASKETBALLCARSON BOYS 50, DAYTON 39The Carson JV boys team knocked off Dayton, 50-39 in the State Farm JV Tournament in Reno.Leading Carson was Robby Miller with 20 points, 12 of them on 3-pointers. Miller added seven rebounds and six steals. Asa Carter chipped in 13 points, four assists and three steals. Jared Rooker, Erick Jacquez and Ian Schulz all were solid for Carson. Carson is now 7-6 for the season.UKIAH 28, CARSON GIRLS 25 The Carson JV girls played strong defense but couldn’t covert enough free throws in losing in the State Farm JV Tournament championship game on Saturday.The teams went back and forth with Ukiah taking the 28-25 game. Michelle Perry led the team with 13 points. Lindy Lehman and Christina Boling each scored four points. Coach Mike Peterson credited his team for not giving up and playing hard against the bigger Ukiah team. Carson was down 10-5 after the first quarter.Perry and Lehman were both named to the all tournament team. Carson, 8-4 overall, plays Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against Bishop Manogue. FRESHMEN GIRLS-BASKETBALLCARSON 64, RENO 36The Carson freshmen girls basketball team won the State Farm JV Tournament on Saturday beating Reno, 64-36.Serena Miller scored 34 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, had seven steals and five blocks on her way to being named tournament MVP. Andrea Maffei added 11 steals, four points, three rebounds and three assists.Bailey Allen scored six points, had 10 steals, 10 rebounds and six assists. Melissa Glanzmann added nine points and five steals. Allen and Glanzmann were named to the all-tournament team. Brianna Alvarado scored six points, had eight steals and 11 rebounds.JV WRESTLINGCarson’s Dominic Kinder and Brian Castillo finished first and second at the 120 pound weight class at the Spanish Springs JV tournament on Saturday. Elijiah Fajayan finished third in the 145-pound weight class. Caden Lehman and Garrett McDermont finished fourth at 106 pounds and 138 pounds respectively. Carson returns to action next weekend at Sparks.
