Senator Square: Schools taking winter break

The winter break is upon us. The students and staff alike are looking forward to some regrouping time before we return on Jan. 7. Upon returning, we will be gearing up to take first-semester finals.

Many of my seniors keep telling me that they can't believe the year is half over. I tell them if they think this is going by fast, to wait until they're my age that time goes by faster and faster each year. And with that said, I want to slow down for just this moment to cherish today and all the blessings it brings. Enjoy the holidays!

STUDENT COUNCIL REPORT

Winter break is finally here! Students have to keep up on their studies this year because this is the first year that Carson High School is having finals the second week we get back.

Sports also will be going on during break. You can check out their schedules on http://www.nnd1.org.

I hope that everyone has a great break!

GOVERNMENT CLASS WINS AWARDS

Mrs. Golik's honors government class competed last weekend at the University of Nevada, Reno in the district "We the People" competition.

The competition judges students based on their Constitutional knowledge and modern day application of the Constitution. Mrs. Golik's class was divided into six teams to compete against the other schools in the Northern district.

Unit One and Unit Six teams of her class walked away with the best unit awards for the competition. Unit One members included Courtney Hack, Cara Dumonte, Abigail Hersey and Katie Borgman. Unit Six members included Nicholas Forbes, Hannah Fasiang, Nick Dicianno and Walker Barnett.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week's senior spotlight is on Nicolas DiCianno. Nick has a weighted grade-point average of 4.24 and is continuing his demanding academic schedule by taking advanced-placement and honors classes during his senior year.

He was a member of the We the People team that was chosen to represent Carson High School at the district competition at the University of Nevada, Reno. As a member of Mrs. Golik's Honors Government class, Nick's team, Unit 6, won the top award for that unit among the eight other Northern Nevada schools.

In addition to his academics, Nick works many hours per week at the Galaxy Fandango movie theater. Nick is planning to further his education in either mechanical or mining engineering at UNR.

Thank you Nick for the contributions you have made to the class of 2013.-
