The Nevada Wolf Pack football team is ranked in both national Top 25 polls for the first time in school history.
The Wolf Pack is ranked No. 25 in both the Associated Press media poll and the USA Today coaches poll that were released Sunday. This is the first time Nevada has ever been ranked in the USA Today poll and the first time since 1948 that Nevada has been in the Associated Press Top 25.
The Wolf Pack beat Brigham Young, 27-13, on Saturday in Provo, Utah to climb into the Top 25 in both polls and improve to 4-0 for the first time since moving to Division I-A in 1992. The Pack was 26th in the Associated Press poll and 27th in the USA Today poll last week.
Nevada first appeared in the Associated Press poll on Oct. 4, 1948 at No. 19. The Pack, behind All-American quarterback Stan Heath, rose as high as No. 10 that season on Oct. 25 before falling out of the poll in mid-November after losing to Santa Clara, 14-0. The Pack finished 9-2 that season for coach Joe Sheetketski.
Heath finished fifth in the Heisman voting that year behind SMU's Doak Walker, North Carolina's Charlie Justice, Penn's Chuck Bednarik and California's Jackie Jensen. Jensen would later go on to coach the Wolf Pack baseball team in 1970 and 71, coaching current Pack coach Gary Powers.
Nevada returns to action on Saturday (7 p.m.) at UNLV to meet the Rebels at Sam Boyd Stadium for the annual Battle for the Fremont Cannon.
UNLV beat New Mexico, 45-10, Saturday night in Las Vegas to improve to 1-3 and give Bobby Hauck his first victory as Rebels head coach. The Wolf Pack beat UNLV, 63-28, last season at Mackay Stadium for its fifth consecutive victory in the rivalry series.
