The Douglas boys' tennis team rattled off its second impressive win in a row Thursday afternoon, beating South Tahoe 13-5 at the Vikings' new courts.

The doubles teams of Matt Thomas-Matt Williams and Garon Athanacio-Craig Stratton each went 2-1 while Grant Mason and Shane Patton added a doubles win as Douglas improved to 4-2 on the year.

"This win was huge for us," Douglas coach Rod Smith said. "Over the years, South Tahoe's tennis program has been very strong & this year is no exception.

"To soundly beat a perennial power, our guys needed to show tremendous focus and effort, and that's exactly what they did."

Junior James TenBroeck went 3-0 and freshman Pat Johnson was 2-0 to lead the singles while Cody Tindel went 2-1 and Matt Johnson picked up a win.

GIRLS

The Douglas girls ran into a wall against a powerful South Tahoe squad Thursday afternoon as the Vikings gained the inside track to the Sierra League title with an 11-7 win over the Tigers in Minden.

Singles standouts Amelia Ritger and Kari TenBroeck dominated their sets, account for most of Douglas' points with three wins each. The doubles pairing of Rose Lombino and Marissa Mennicucci picking Douglas' final point of the day with a 7-6 (8-6) win in the third round.

"Amelia and Kari played well against a talented singles lineup," Douglas coach Roger Rusmisel said. "This was particularly true against Rebecca Roberts, who is one of the best singles players in Northern Nevada.

"South Tahoe's experienced doubles lineup was too much for us today. They have four returning starters and they played with the poise of veterans. Our doubles teams are still learning the game and are in the process of developing team chemistry that is so important in doubles.

"Overall, the team met my expectations. They competed until the end and they demonstrated the high level of sportsmanship that Douglas teams are known for."
