Labor Day weekend events

Kids fly free

Children age 8-17 can fly free starting at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Lake Tahoe Airport, courtesy of the Truckee Tahoe Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association. All children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Registration is at the lower level entrance to the airport.

Kirkwood fun run and chili cookoff

The Kirkwood 5K/10K trail runs and kids fun runs begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Kirkwood Mountain Resort. The 10K is a trail run up the ski hill on single track and dirt road. Fun runs for kids include 1/2 mile and 1 mile events for $10. The 5K and 10K are $40. For information, call 775-588-2864. Hang around after the run for the Kirkwood annual Thin Air Chili Cookoff from 12-5 p.m. at Kirkwood Village Plaza. $20 to taste chili, beer and wine; includes commemorative glass. Live music, bounce house, face painting, crafts and pony rides. A portion of the proceeds benefits Kirkwood Ski Education Foundation.

Viva Valhalla

Viva Valhalla, a celebration of South Lake Tahoe's Latino culture, will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Grand Lawn of the Tallac Historic Site on Emerald Bay Road. Enjoy the sounds of Latin music, colorful dancing and traditional food and drink. Visit www.valhallatahoe.com or call 530-541-4975.

South Shore pyrotechnics

South Shore's Labor Day fireworks tradition will begin at 8:30 p.m. Sunday and will be synchronized to music from radio stations KRLT-FM 93.9 and KOWL-AM 1490. The fireworks will be visible throughout town with numerous vantage points, including the M.S. Dixie II and Tahoe Queen paddlewheelers, Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course and Regan, El Dorado and Nevada beaches.

Lake Tahoe Restaurant week

More than 30 restaurants around the lake will participate in this inaugural event. On the South Shore, check out 19 Kitchen & Bar, Fresh Ketch, Latin Soul and Edgewood Tahoe, where the restaurants will offer three-course prix-fixe menus for $20, $30 or $40 per person. Alpen Wine Fest

The 22nd annual Alpen Wine Fest, benefiting Can Do Multiple Sclerosis, will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at The Village at Squaw Valley. The event will feature wine tasting, a silent auction and raffle and live entertainment. The $40 ticket includes a commemorative wine glass and unlimited tasting.
