Despite some early struggles, Douglas High senior Bethany Wurster recovered to claim individual medalist honors in the first Sierra League girls' golf tournament of the year Tuesday at Thunder Canyon in Washoe Valley.
Wurster came back from a 40 on the front nine to finish at 77, winning the tournament by 10 strokes.
"No doubt she is the top dog in the Sierra League," Douglas coach Steve Gustafson said.
Douglas took fourth as a team while Carson won the tournament.
"You could tell it was the first match of the season," Gustafson said. "The newer girls were a little nervous and some of the scores reflected that.
"I went into this match not knowing what to expect. There were a lot of new faces on every team. I just hoped our girls would go out, give it their best and learn how high school golf works. I'm proud of them. I have no doubt they'll do better next week at Empire Ranch. Thunder Canyon plays a little longer than Genoa (Douglas' home course), so the kids had to make some quick adjustments. It's not easy for someone with little or no tournament experience."
Tawnie Wentz (112), Molly Jordan (124) and Emily Gosselin (127) were all competing in their first high school matches and helped Douglas to the fourth-place finish.
