We have heard on the news about scams that are being done to people, but it never really made a big impression on me until yesterday when we received one of their phony letters.
In a letter addressed to my husband, Mike, he was notified that he had won $50,500 in a "lottery draw." There is also a check (which is not real) enclosed that is for $3,850, and the letter says that he must use a portion of it to pay "taxes" of $2,700.
Unfortunately, this is all false. The letter falsely says it is from a group in New York, when it is actually a Canadian scam, with a Canadian phone number to call to find out where to send your $2,700 check for "taxes." The postage stamp also shows that it was sent from Canada.
I have talked with Coleville postmaster, Josh, who agreed with me that the people he knows of who have received these scams are almost all seniors.
If you receive such a letter, please do not believe that it is true. Take the letter and envelope and any fake check to the post office so it can be given to the Postal Inspection Service to follow up on helping with prosecution of these criminals. The main thing to remember is that if it sounds too good to be true, you can be sure that it isn't true. Please be very careful about believing something like this, as you will lose so much.
Women's Club bazaar
The Antelope Valley Women's Club's annual bazaar is Sunday, Nov. 7, noon to 5 p.m., at the Walker Community Center. A delicious roast beef dinner will begin at 4:30 p.m. To reserve space as a vendor or to get more information, call (530) 495-2918. The funds raised will be used for scholarships for Coleville High students.
Art show
The Antelope Valley Artists will have their annual art show on Sunday, Nov. 7, noon to 5 p.m., at the Walker Senior Center across from the community building. These people are so very talented and their art is beautiful, so check it out. If you are a local artist who would like to be involved, call Nancy at (530) 495-2488 to sign up.
Coleville football
Our small school has made a mark on the Northern 1-A league again this year by clinching the title. The boys are now 8-0 in the regular season, with only one more league game before the playoffs. Their last league game is at home this Saturday, 1 p.m., against McDermitt. We are sure they will score a lot of points, since their last two games have been wins of 78-6 and 60-12.
