Couple wins lottery in Walker

On Friday, March 2, a universal dream came true for a couple who buy their lottery tickets from the Walker General Store when they are in town. Their ticket hit five out of five, missing only the mega-number. Theirs was one of only three tickets in California to hit five out of five, which made it worth $38,559 to them. Debie and Becky at the store say these are such nice people that they are delighted to see them win. It's great to see that this can happen somewhere other than a large city.

-- Saturday evening the Coleville High boys' basketball team played a fundraising game against a team from the Mono County Sheriff's Department. The game was a lot of fun to watch, even though the sheriffs really took off in the second half and ended up winning convincingly. A highlight for all who attended the game was the performance of the Walker River Color Guard. These kids were awesome, and the audience really let them know how much they enjoyed the show.

-- The Friends of the Library group is meeting 4 p.m. today at the Coleville Library. If you are interested in joining, please come and meet the members. This is a new group and they would really appreciate even more local participation.

-- Remember Daylight-Saving Time starts this Saturday night, so get your clocks set forward.

-- The Beta Sigma Phi corned beef and cabbage dinner is March 17, 5-7 p.m. at the Walker Community Center. There will be great food, a no-host bar by the Antelope Valley Lions Club, and a raffle which includes a $500 Visa gift card. Dinner cost is only $10 for adults and $6 for children 9 and under.

-- The Antelope Valley Lions Club will need reservations for the Pasture Golf Tournament by March 20. You can call Dave Murray (530) 495-2822, Clint Hershey (530) 495-2935, or Lee Sims (530) 495-2488 to reserve. This is always such a fun event and great fundraiser, with all money collected going to the Jackie Giorgi Scholarship Fund for Coleville High graduates. If you don't play golf, you can still come, see everyone, and have a delicious barbecue lunch for $12.

-- One of our long-time Antelope Valley residents and a fixture in business here has retired. Feb. 28 was Dianna Riise's last day at Amerigas in Walker. She will really be missed by all those that she has taken such good care of through the years. We wish her a very relaxed and happy retirement and look forward to seeing her around town.

-- Students of the month for January at Antelope Elementary School were Victoria Roberts, Colton Forristal, James Gonzales and Madyson Collins. Congratulations to them for their good work. I'll let you know the February winners next week.
