Wet storm rolling into Valley tonight

Nearly an inch of rain is expected to fall in the Carson Valley over the next few days, with snow in the upper elevations above 8,000 feet.

The National Weather Service issued a special statement this morning, forecasting the chance of rain will begin to rise 4 p.m. today reaching up to 80 percent by 5 a.m. Sunday.

A low pressure system is moving along the Central and Southern California coast Sunday and Monday.

According to the weather service, there's lots of moisture associated with the system and it could produce substantial amounts of rainfall for Eastern California and Western Nevada south of Interstate 80.

By Monday, the weather service is forecasting the storm will shift south into Mono and Lyon counties.

There's a chance of scattered thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday, which could produce locally heavy rain, causing ponding or accumulations of small hail.

Like the storm earlier this month, snow levels will remain above 8,000 feet.

Travel across higher Sierra passes, such as Mt. Rose, Ebbetts, Monitor, Sonora and Tioga could be complicated by snowfall. Motorists traveling these passes should be prepared for bad weather and carry tire chains.
