Three people were arrested after leading authorities on a high-speed chase along the steep winding roads around Emerald Bay and up the west shore of Lake Tahoe.
The pursuit began about 1:30 p.m. Friday after South Lake Tahoe police attempted to stop a white Chevrolet Suburban with Nevada license plates in the area of Springwood Drive because they believed it contained a 21-year-old South Lake Tahoe man wanted on suspicion of two felony probation violations.
When police tried to stop the vehicle, the driver sped off, driving west down the center lane of Highway 50, running red lights and reaching speeds of up to 65 mph, said Officer Ryan Wagoner.
The Suburban then went north on Highway 89, leading California Highway Patrol Officers, El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies and South Lake Tahoe police around the highway's steep and narrow section surrounding Emerald Bay.
Unidentified narcotics were thrown from the vehicle during the chase, said California Highway Patrol Office Andrew Poyner.
Authorities deployed several spike strips during the chase. The driver of the vehicle was able to avoid at least one of the spike strips.
Two spike strips were deployed successfully, flattening tires on the Suburban, but the driver continued riding on the vehicle's rims for several miles, Poyner said.
The Suburban turned right on State Route 28 in Tahoe City and the chase came to an end about 2:15 p.m. in the Dollar Point area.
The three people who are in custody were all occupants of the Suburban. No injuries have been reported.
