Smith's stores offer support for Nevada military families

Smith's Food & Drug Stores is making it easy for customers to support military families in Northern Nevada through its in-store promotion with Operation Homefront Nevada.

From May 23 through Aug. 14, customers can donate change in coin boxes at every Smith's check stand.

The funds will be used to purchase school supplies and backpacks for the dependents of deployed troops from Northern Nevada.

In addition, funds collected for Operation Homefront will assist families needing emergency aid such as food, clothing, baby care items, vehicle repair, medical care and financial assistance during times of personal crisis.

"Our goal is to make a difference in the quality of life for our military families," said Carl Long, Operation Homefront Nevada chapter president.

"We are honored to partner with Smith's Food & Drug Stores who are strong charitable advocates in our community,"he said. "In 2009, more than $16,000 was received as a result of customers' donations through Smith's."

Operation Homefront Nevada is a nonprofit organization that is run entirely by volunteers.

Founded in response to the need to support the families of deployed service members, the nonprofit charity serves 37 military communities throughout the United States and has provided critical assistance to more than 40,000 military families in need.

The organization has been acclaimed by Charity Navigator, America's leading nonprofit evaluator, as being among the elite of charities by receiving a 4-star rating.
