Man accused of meth trafficking

Staff Reports

Bail was set at $50,000 cash for a 52-year-old Dayton man charged with trafficking in methamphetamine and failing to register as a sex offender.

East Fork Justice Jim EnEarl appointed lawyer Kris Brown to represent Sean Edward Coots and set a hearing for May 12.

Coots, a Dayton resident, was arrested by Tri-NET officers after he allegedly sold a quarter-ounce of methamphetamine in an undercover operation in north Douglas County.

He reportedly told the contact he could provide larger quantities of methamphetamine for discount prices.

The same day he was arrested on the drug charge, Coots was charged with failing to register in Lyon County as a sex offender.

According to the Nevada Sex Offender Registry, Coots was convicted in Washoe County in 1981 of battery with intent to commit sexual assault.

He is listed as a tier 3 offender, indicating a high risk to reoffend.

Brown told EnEarl her client was seeking release because he lives with his mother who is to undergo surgery this month and is relying on him to care for her.

EnEarl refused to lower the bail, and told Coots he could bring it up again next week.
