Three join ranks of historic Carson Valley women

Staff Reports

Three Carson Valley women will be honored in the Douglas County Historical Society's Women in History Project reception, 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center, 1477 Highway 395, Gardnerville.

This year's honorees are Ida May Baker, nominated by Patricia Gibson Baker; Sybil Larrouy Dunagan, nominated by Susan P. Smith; and Clara Hawkins, nominated by Laurie Hickey.

"Preserving Their Legacy for Tomorrow" is the theme for this year's Women in History Remembering Project. The idea behind the remembering project is to collect biographies of women, living or deceased, who live or have lived in Douglas County and who significantly contributed to the history and quality of life in Douglas County. The biographies are archived at the museum in the VanSickle Research Library and with the Jean Ford Nevada Women's History Project in Reno.

The historical society recognizes Douglas County women in March as part of national Women in History Month.

The reception, which is open to the public, is one of the activities the historical society sponsors to preserve county history.

Memorabilia of the honorees are on display at the museum and refreshments will be served following the program. There is no admission charge for the reception.

Reception sponsors are Aladdin Flowers, A Wildflower, Harrah's/Harveys and The Record-Courier.
