Swimming: Tiger swimmers take opening duals

The Douglas High swim team enjoyed a dominating first outing of the season Saturday, sweeping a pair of dual meets over Truckee and North Valleys at the Carson Valley Swim Center.

The Tigers won all but one event overall and had many second- and third-place finishes.

For the girls, Haley VonSchottenstein (100 free, 200 IM) and Michelle Forman (200 free, 100 fly) each took a pair of first-place finishes.

VonSchottenstein's time of 56.73 in the 100 free led a quartet of Tigers sweeping the top four positions in the race. Mary Smithen was second, Taylor Killion was third and Cassandra Parr was fourth.

Smithen won the 50 free with a time of 26.58 and teamed with Forman, VonSchottenstein and Paula Sigala to win the 200 free relay with a time of 1:49.25.

Forman, Smithen, Killion and Meagan Skilling won the 400 free relay with a time of 3:59.54 and Killion, Skilling, Sigala and VonSchottenstein won the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:01.63.

Sarah Koontz won the 500 free with a time of 5:42.22 and took second in the 200 free with a time of 2:08.66.

Skilling won the 100 back (1:06.89) while Yuchen Jin took third.

Other highlight performances for the girls included Sigala taking third in the 50 free and Parr following in fourth.

Chandra Matheson was third in the 100 breaststroke with Sigala following in fourth. Killion was second in the 200 IM and Skilling was third.

Douglas also took third in the 200 free relay with the team of Parr, Matheson, Sylvanna Villalbo and Jin, second in the 400 free relay with the team of Parr, Kalynn Hobson, Taralyn Chitwood and Koontz and third in the 200 medley relay with the team of Jin, Hillary Sapp, Matheson and Chitwood.

On the boys' side, Douglas swept first place in every event.

Colby Cain (50 free, 100 free), Eric VanBeuge (100 back, 100 fly), Cameron Morefield (200 free, 100 breaststroke) and freshman Kyle Johnston (500 free, 200 IM) each claimed a pair of first places and the quartet also managed to win the 200 medley relay.

Morefield, Cain, Sam Ansel and Timothy Smithen won the 200 free relay and Johnston, Smithen, VanBeuge and Michael Darby won the 400 free relay.

Ansel took fourth in the 50 free, Devin Osband was third in the 100 free, Smithen was second in the 100 back and third in the 200 IM and Darby, Osband, Robert Resnik and Justin Harmon took fourth in the 200 free relay.
