Smith's collects $82,000 for relief efforts in quake-torn Haiti

Smith's Food & Drug Stores have contributed $82,422 to the American Red Cross International Response Fund as a result of customers' donations made during the recent campaign for Haitian earthquake relief.

The Northern Nevada Chapter was credited with $3,508 of the donation collected through Smith's eight stores in Northern Nevada.

During the month of January, customers of Smith's Food & Drug made voluntary contributions to the American Red Cross by simply adding any amount to their checkout purchase. All funds collected will be used by the Red Cross to provide food, water, shelter, medical supplies and other assistance to the people of Haiti.

"Smith's parent company Kroger joined in our customers' efforts by contributing $250,000 to the American Red Cross relief effort as well," said Marsha Gilford, Smith's vice president of public affairs. "Together we have created some comfort for the Haitian people."
