A new twist on 'Romeo and Juliet'

Staff Reports

Forget the tights, forget the formalities when TOAD retells the classic tale of "Romeo and Juliet" opening Thursday at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School.

The Theater of Arts Discipline production is performed by students from Carson City and Carson Valley, who breathe life into a version of the story of the famous lovers never seen before.

The age-old enemies, the Capulets and Montagues, have assumed identities as the embodiments of winter and fall as the ill-fated, star-crossed lovers strive to end their families' ancient feud with the bonds of love.

A modern twist on this tale injects the persona of Big Brother lighting the multimedia screens on the set bedecked with icicles and creeping vines. Swords cross, punches fly and a modern musical background punctuates Shakespeare's play.

Tickets are $10 adults and $8 for students and seniors, available at (775) 219-3577 or toadinc@gmail.com

Performances are 7 p.m. June 24, 25, and 26 at Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School in the Gardnerville Ranchos. Information, www.toad.vpweb.com
