Assembly race financing down

The four Republican Assembly candidates raised less than a third of the money that was collected in 2006, the last time there wasn't an incumbent. In 2006, candidates raised $57,900. In the 2010 race, all four candidates combined for $16,398.

Former county commissioner Kelly Kite raised the lion's share of that money, with $13,650 in contributions.

His largest campaign contributor was the Keystone Corp. of Las Vegas, whose Web site says its mission "is to protect and improve Nevada's business environment." The company donated $5,000 to Kite's campaign. He also received $1,000 donations from McDermid Management Co., the Retail Association of Nevada, Associated General Contractors, Sierra Nevada Association of Realtors, and the Nevada Motor Transportation Association.

Kite spent $10,721.88 on his campaign. Kite spent a little more than $2,000 on signs with A Sign Shop in Gardnerville, another $1,000 with R&S Optimum Offset in Minden, more than $900 at Tahoe Ridge Winery, $3,137 with English Mailing Services in Jacks Valley and more than $1,400 advertising in The Record-Courier.

Opponent Jim Wheeler received $1,150 in cash contributions with the Association of General Contractors donating $500, Dave Collins of Incline Village donating $250, Julian Smith of Washoe Valley donating $200. He's spent $1,024.88 so far in the campaign.

Candidate Janet Murphy raised $1,000 in contributions and has spent $5,000 in the campaign. Murphy's sole campaign contributor is Brian Keith Byer of Glenbrook.

She spent $1,200 in advertising with The Record-Courier, $475 with CatsEye Graphics in Minden, $690 with Traffic Builders in Reno and $2,634 on mailing services with English Mailing Services in Jacks Valley.

Barbara Smallwood raised $598 in contributions and has expended $594.98 on her campaign. She received a single $300 donation from C.T. Fleming of Gardnerville. Her largest single expense was the $100 filing fee paid to the Secretary of State's Office. The second highest was $73.90 paid to ABE Printing of Minden.

Democrat JoEtta Brown raised $5,452 for her campaign. She has spent $2,643.60 so far. She appears on the Nov. 2 general election ballot.

Clerk-Treasurer Ted Thran contributed $3,138.37 to his own campaign. He has expended $2,758.12 on signs, and advertising in The Record-Courier and Sierra Sage.

Opponent Lynn Hettrick contributed $2,346 to his campaign, spending most of it on signs and advertising services. Republican Stephanie Brooks and Independent American Bob Conner reported spending nothing on their campaigns.

The big spender in the first Minden Town Board primary is Robert Pohlman, who used $832.63 of his own money and spent $681.79 on his campaign. William Souligny spent $578.21 on his campaign and Matt Bernard spent $209.70.
