National Day of the Cowboy celebrated July 24 in Virginia City

Soroptimist International of the Comstock, Dayton hosts A Journey to Remember, celebrating the National Day of the Cowboy, on July 24.

The evening of living history begins at the Virginia & Truckee train depot, 565 S. K St., in Virginia City at 5 p.m., with light appetizers, wine, beer and lemonade served prior to the 5:45 p.m. departure aboard newly refurbished train cars. Dinner, dessert, and a variety of entertainment will all be delivered at various stops along the V&T route. Seating is limited and tickets must be purchased by July 16.

Participants can choose to dress in period costume adding to the theme. John Bennets, a third-generation Silver City native will give a lecture about the Yellowjacket Mine, which is also where a barbecue dinner complete with all the sides will be served. Catered by John Hertzel, owner of Grandma Hattie's Restaurant in Carson City, the menu includes barbecue pork ribs, smoked beef tri-tip and mesquite grilled chicken with an assortment of sauces, an variety of summer salads, seasonal fresh fruits, ranch-style beans, corn-on-the-cob and cornbread.

"The train departs Virginia City at 5:45 p.m. and after dinner and the lecture at Yellowjacket Mine, the ride will continue with narration to American Flat, where dessert and coffee will be served," said Dorothy Wingard, Soroptimist president.

To honor the National Day of the Cowboy, Tony Argento of Reno, who has been a cowboy poet and musician since the age of 4, will provide entertainment on the return ride.

Some details of the evening's historical presentations are being withheld for surprise factor, but suffice to say, this will be a most memorable event, said Johnye Saylor, the club's past president.

"This is also the first night of the full moon which will add something special and we plan to do this each July at the same time."

Combining so many elements will make the experience unforgettable, said Lois Wallace, club parliamentarian.

"This provides a unique, fun-filled experience people can enjoy and also fulfills Soroptimist's commitment to educate people about our area while raising funds that support our local women and children," Wallace said.

Soroptimists provide support to Carson Tahoe Regional Cancer Center, scholarships at three area high schools and assistance to women and children in the community who are facing financial challenges.

There will also be a raffle with prizes and gift baskets. One alcoholic beverage is included in the $45 ticket price, with additional drinks available for purchase.
