The first Candy Dance began in 1919 by Genoa resident Lillian Virgin Finnegan to raise money to purchase street lights for the town. Finnegan and the women of Genoa made candy to serve at the dance. The candy making and dance continued each year to raise funds to pay Genoa's electric bill for the street lights.

Funds raised by the Town of Genoa during Candy Dance weekend provide a substantial portion of Genoa's annual budget.
