Orchestra informational program at Carson Mall on March 9

Staff Reports

The Carson Mall hosts a music performance and discussion about a new string orchestra class to be held at Carson High School in fall 2010. The free event is 2-3 p.m. March 9 at the mall, 1313 S. Carson St., Carson City.

Carson City Symphony's Education Director and violinist Sue Kitts and guitarist Jacki Montgomery will perform. Kitts will answer questions about the class, and a representative from the music store Play Your Own Music will discuss instrument rentals.

Beginning in the fall, String Orchestra ensemble will be open to all orchestral string players - violin, viola, cello, and contrabass - regardless of experience. Home-schooled students and public-school students are eligible. Presented by Carson High School in partnership with the Carson City Symphony Association, the class will fulfill the humanities/occupational graduation requirement.

"Students can join the fun as they explore classical, folk, and jazz music while polishing their skills as string players," said Kitts. "The course will challenge all levels, from beginning to advanced students, with great music chosen to enhance creativity and teamwork."
