Youth recognized with awards

Soroptimist International of Carson Valley recognized young people with awards at Two Guys from Italy on Feb. 9.

Douglas High School student Laura Cruz received the Violet Richardson Award for her volunteer service with Psi Mu Sigma, Carson City Health and Human Service, El Arca Animal Shelter in Guatemala and the American Legion of Guatemala.

Cruz received a $500 award and is eligible for recognition at regional and federation levels of Soroptimist.

Soroptimists recognized Student Achievers of the Month, Mark Pieters, Sam Vernaza and Terry Hancock of Douglas High School and Karina Young of Sierra Lutheran High School. The students are nominated by high school teachers, counselors or administrators, and chosen by the Soroptimist Education Committee for their hard work, dedication and commitment to overcoming challenges.

Soroptimist International of Carson Valley is comprised of professional businesswomen in management and leadership roles in the community.

The club has worked to encourage growth, development and success of women and children for the past 37 years. Soroptimists' annual fundraisers include the Savor the Flavor wine tasting event and creating Carson Valley Days buttons.
